Formula used

Add up the daily categories per person, then scale to the group and trip:

Per person/day = lodging + food + transport + activities
Per day (group) = per person/day × travelers
Trip total = per day (group) × days

This per-day approach makes it easy to compare destinations — a daily figure of $140 in one country might be $40 in another.

Worked examples

Mid-range couple. $60 lodging, $40 food, $15 transport, $25 activities per person = $140/person/day; for two over 7 days, $1,960 total.

Backpacker. Hostel and street food might bring it to $35–50/day.

Comfort travel. Hotels and restaurants can push a daily figure well above $200.

Who should use this calculator

Backpackers and budget travelers setting a daily cap, anyone comparing the cost of living in different destinations, and travelers who'd rather think in “per day” terms than one big total. It pairs well with the full trip budget calculator.

Why a daily figure is useful

A per-day budget is easy to track on the road — you simply check whether you're over or under each day. It also makes destinations directly comparable and helps you decide how many days you can afford. Multiply the daily figure by your trip length to sanity-check the total against your savings.

Sticking to your daily budget

  • Track as you go with a notes app or budgeting app.
  • Average across days — a splurge day is fine if balanced by a cheap one.
  • Prepay big items (lodging, tours) so your daily cash is mostly food and transport.
  • Keep a small daily buffer for the unexpected.

Limitations of this calculator

This sums the daily figures you provide and scales them; accuracy depends on realistic inputs for your destination. It excludes flights and one-off pre-trip costs (use the full trip budget calculator for those), plus insurance, visas and currency fees.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget per day for travel?

Roughly $30–60/day for budget travel, $80–150 mid-range, and $180+ for comfort — but it varies hugely by country. Enter your own category costs for a tailored figure.

Does this include flights?

No — daily budgets cover on-the-ground costs. Add flights and pre-trip expenses with the total trip budget calculator.

How do I compare destinations?

Set the same categories for each and compare the per-day figure. The difference shows which destination stretches your money further.

Should lodging be per person or per room?

Enter the per-person share. If two people share a $120 room, that's $60 each per day.

How do I stay within a daily budget?

Track spending daily, average across days so an occasional splurge is offset, and prepay big items so your daily cash mostly covers food and transport.
