Common: 15–20% in the US.

Enter values above and press Calculate to see your result.

Formula used

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ People

Worked examples

Restaurant. $60 bill, 18% tip, 2 people: tip $10.80, total $70.80, $35.40 each.

Round up. Rounding the total to $71 makes the tip $11 and the split cleaner.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Set the tip percentage for the service and country.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting.
  4. Optionally round the tip or total up.
  5. Read the tip, total and per-person share.

How much should you tip?

In the US, 15–20% is typical at restaurants. Many European countries include service or expect only small rounding, and some cultures don't tip at all. Use the percentage field to match local custom rather than a fixed habit.

Splitting fairly

Dividing the total (bill + tip) by the number of people gives an even split. For uneven orders, agree shares first, then apply the same tip percentage to each.

Frequently asked questions

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Custom varies. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common and reasonable; enter that amount as the bill if you prefer.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

No. If a service charge is already added, an extra tip is optional. Check the bill before adding more.

How much do I tip per person?

The calculator shows tip per person — the total tip divided by the number of people splitting the bill.
